Coast Sport is delighted to welcome their newest ambassador, Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist and high jumping star, Nicola McDermott. Joining a growing stable of local talent, McDermott will gain access to the premium facilities, equipment and treatment supplied by leading allied health services provider Coast Sport in their pledge to support aspiring athletes to achieve greatness.
McDermott first got into high jump through little athletics when she was 7 years old. While competing at her first school carnival in year 2 it became apparent that she had a gift for sport. She was also tall and loved running and commenced training specifically for the high jump event at 8 years of age. Since then she has competed in numerous domestic and international events including World Championships and hasn’t looked back.
The team at Coast Sport play an integral role in McDermott’s training and competition regime. She is currently working with the physiotherapy team to not only keep her in “good shape but also enhance her performance”. Coast Sport conduct “regular screenings and are able to identify where my weaknesses are and tailor a program accordingly” explains McDermott. She is also an advocate of Coast Sport’s other modality services including sports nutrition and the practical advice provided by their leading nutritionists. “I recently got off a 36- hour flight trip to Europe using Coast Sport’s advice and programming and felt noticeably better than previous trips without having a specific program of what to do and eat during long haul travel”, says McDermott.
Having successfully competed in the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast in front of an ecstatic home crown, Nicola McDermott is currently in Europe commencing her international campaign where she aims to gain as much experience as she can. Her next major international meet will be World University Games and World Championships next year.
With an ultimate goal to take Australia to the next level for high jump by achieving over 2metres and jumping higher than any woman previously, Nicola McDermott is certainly a rising star to keep your eye on. “I am in it for the long haul and I believe jumping this high will pave the way for more women in the future to jump over 2m from Australia” states McDermott.
