The importance of grip strength in golf
Why is grip strength such a factor in defining low and high level golfers?
Well there are a number of opposing forces -lateral, vertical and rotational forces that we produce from the ground up that need to be translated to the shaft via the hands and grip with accelerating speed, hence a lack of grip strength means a decrease in control and therefore power loss through impact.
A recent study had a look at whether an 8 week programme to improve grip strength had an effect on improving ball strike in high level golfers.
What they found was that an increase in the lead hand of right handed golfers, so the left hand which provides the most dominant grip forces during swing acceleration, plays an important role in overall driving performance including ball speed, carry and drive distance.
