Previous studies have shown how physical activity has been associated with lower risk of heart disease but the association with risk of Cancer has not been specifically investigated until recently.
The latest study of 1.44 million adults published in JAMA Internal medicine showed that leisure time physical activity of moderate to vigorous intensity was associated with a decrease in risk of 13 types of Cancers including liver, lung, breast, colon, bladder and kidney.
Physical activity and exercise most likely influences the development of colon or bowel cancer in multiple ways. Physical activity may protect against colon cancer and tumour development through its role in energy balance, hormone metabolism, insulin regulation, and by decreasing the time the colon is exposed to potential carcinogens. Physical activity has also been found to alter a number of inflammatory and immune factors, some of which may influence colon cancer risk.
For breast cancer risk most studies have been on pre- and post-menopausal women and the reduction in risk from physical activity, however, there is evidence to show that it could reduce the risk in the adolescent population as well. Physical activity and exercise can cause a reduction in tumour development due a lowering in hormone levels as well as improving the immune system and body composition. These benefits of physical activity also assist in the reduction of endometrial cancer.
Exercise can also be beneficial in reducing the symptoms of cancer and side effects of treatment such as nausea, fatigue and weight gain.
Benefits of exercise include improvement in:
- Appetite and digestion
- Sleep
- Body composition
- Strength and endurance
- Energy
- Mood
